ENTRY-LEVEL TRAINING
Entry-level training is available for Year 12 and 13 school students in Milton, South Otago. This training aims to give students a broad introduction to all the careers available in forestry.
The training is provided by Tokomairiro Training, in partnership with Johnson Forestry Services, Mosgiel. Students will attend for 2 days per week for 32 weeks (two semesters). There is lots of practical training involved, and students work towards NZQA Level 2 and 3 standards, which double as NCEA credits.

COURSE CONTENT
Foundation courses teach practical skills.
- Silviculture training includes learning how to prepare planting sites, plant trees, release spray, and prune trees.
- Harvesting courses include training for breaking out and landing operations.
- Students will also receive training in basic chainsaw operations.
- Other foundation training includes health and safety, and hydration and nutrition.
- Numeracy and literacy courses may also be available.
The course includes visits to forestry operations and other parts of the industry such as sawmills, ports, and research organisations.
COURSE COSTS
In many cases, entry level courses are subsidised or free, and students are given assistance with other costs.
